I Liked Continuum Better
I think Room For Squares is ok. I have not heard Heavier things. I LOVE Continuum. I am disappointed by Battle Studies. I think it is lyrically proficient, however it is somewhat lacking musically. I am not a huge fan of Taylor Swift, however I don't see the point to consiging her to harmonies. Heartbreak Warfare is good, as are Who Says, Assassin, and Friends Lovers or Nothing.
I am appalled and left in a state of wonder at his cover of Crossroads. A bluesman like John Mayer playing one of the great blues staples, and he decides to use some weird synth pedal and NO AMAZING GUITAR SOLO??? I have heard John Mayer's guitar solos; they are great when they are done right; here they are done so very wrong.
Also, I feel like he ripped off the same riff from Stop This Train and used it again for Who Says.
Overall, get it at a discount price if you can find one.

Not John's best work, I hope this isn't a step back
I'm a huge John Mayer fan, I'll admit that to anyone. I've seen him in concert several times, I own every CD of his, and probably spend a few hours a week listening to his music. I was however very disappointed with John's latest offering "Battle Studies". Battle Studies is about the turbulent times we can all face in our relationships with breakups to makeups and everything else in between. It seems perfectly prescribed and marketed to the 19-22 year old girls buying most of John CDs. He'll be playing the part of the thoughtful caring guy and singing about his vulnerability. Truly this is the perfect make-out music for those 19-22 year old guys to use...guaranteed to get those young adult ladies in the mood. The candy pop shell is where this CD ends, there's no substance beneath.

This work isn't as focused as Continuum, which I believe to be John's best work by far. I love the way Continuum melded all the stylistic abilities Mayer has in his repertoire, it was both bluesy and pop...substance and cheese. This CD however just seems like cheese to me; where has the substance gone? Where did the deep blues and inspired lyrics go? It's like going from painting a Picasso to painting one of those caricatures that you could buy in the mall. Don't get me wrong, I'm grading Mayer on his previous works here, compared to the rest of the junk out there this is solid gold. I hope this was just one of those albums an artist releases sometimes to keep themselves relevant while they are really working on the master-piece. I guess in John we trust but until then I guess this will just have to do.

It's Just good!
I'll get right to the point....It's Just Good. If you've enjoyed John's previous offerings, this one does not disappoint. If you are just discovering John, you'll like it, and want to explore his previous albums.
