Fab Listening!
I already owned some of the previously released Beatles CDs. The first two albums Please Please Me and With the Beatles will sound quite different in stereo, and I'll have to admit wasn't sure if I liked it, but after further listening I'm glad I got the stereo. The songs are crisper especially Ringo's percussion contributions can be better appreciated on stereo. Hard Day's Night, Help and Sgt. Pepper also never sounded better! This box set also includes all the Beatles singles which in itself is a real treat. I hadn't heard some of these songs in years! I am enjoying all of this fab music from the most important rock band in the history of rock music. You will also enjoy the mini documentary DVD that is included. It is informative as well as entertaining. This box set is a real treasure for any Beatles fan! I love you George!!! Monday, May 10th, 2010

This Stones fan takes a bow to the Beatles...the music is great, but buyer beware of defects in discounted box sets!
As a Stones fan first, I can't ignore the mastery of the Beatles...this set of remastered Beatles music is classic...any music fan will appreciate this set, which represents one of the most interesting bodies of work of any artist in history (certainly of any artist that lasted less than a decade).
However...I don't like the Beatles enough to pay Amazon's "discounted" $180 price tag, which still seems WAY over the top...so I decided to take my chances with one of the discounted 3rd party sets, and I paid less than $140 for mine. First off, I'll say that the set I received was not a pirated copy, nor were there any defects in the CDs...the music is great (for the Beatles, my one friendly little dig, lol). I also enjoy the extensive liner notes and foldout artwork for each album, presented as gatefold CDs...they're not the quality of Japanese gatefold issues, but interesting enough to add extra value to the set.
If you're someone who is looking for impeccable packaging, however, buyer beware...you might want to consider the non-3rd party sets, as with these "discounted" Beatles box sets you might run into minor defects such as the cardboard divider in the interior of the box being ripped, and some scuffing on the interior of the box and on some of the gatefold CDs...that was my experience, which personally didn't bother me, I just wanted to make sure the CDs worked.
The mini-docs are a nice addition to add some context and background to the music...however if you want more of that, I'd suggest checking out the Beatles documentary from a few years back.
My #1 complaint would be with the meager plastic sleeves the CDs are in to protect them from scuffing inside the gatefold cases. They're like saran wrap or the plastic your groceries are bagged in at your local market...absolutely weak, and inexcusable for a set at this price. When I look at this box set, I see what appears to be an effort on the part of the artist/whoever made it to leave a definite Beatles document behind...so why skimp on the plastic protectors? Don't get it.
If you want to protect your Beatles investment, get some real plastic CD protectors at your local record store or order some online (for probably cheaper)...as I start collecting more gatefold CD issues, you can never have a surplus of those plastic sleeves, which are nice to have around.
At the end of the day, the music speaks for itself and is the cornerstone of any music collection...and again, this is coming from someone who's more in the Stones camp than in the Beatles camp.

as fantastic as you'd expect
It's pretty tough to overstate just how good this music is. The remastered versions have let me hear things that hundreds of listens to the '80s CDs didn't. Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Only if you have a good sound system.....
I've been contemplating wether to replace my 1987 sgt. pepper CD with a 2009 Remaster CD from the local best buy and maybe pick up revolver while there. After sampling some FLAC's from an online source and watching a video analysis on youtube it seems like these are only worthwhile if you have a good sound system. If you have a BOSE system or a high quality stereo system with an amp and 5.1 speakers and all that stuff these are 100% worth it but if you just use a cheap regular CD player, your laptop, or a clock radio CD player with regular headphones you won't hear much difference from the 1987's. The seperate stereo CD's from this boxset are $12.99 each at most retail stores. I plan to replace my 1987 pepper and grab revolver while I can as well. So if you don't want to throw out the cash, keep your 87 cd's or think about what equipment you have first and then decide. Of course, if you've NEVER heard or bought beatles albums on CD before, get these remasters, no questions asked.
As for the music, it gets 5 stars. It's the Beatles. Not much more to say that hasn't been said already.
When I buy Revolver in a few days I will update this post with some thoughts.

A box set befitting a legendary band...
Some more cynical would maybe say that these box sets - mono and stereo - are just more ways to milk the Beatles empire. Maybe that is even partially true. But I prefer to look at this set as something long overdue and years in the making.
Where the three-anthology CD series in the '90s showed the raw talent and beginnings of the band, the Beatles Stereo Box Set is, IMO, a culmination of the entire career of the Fab Four. And does so with amazing thoroughness - all albums are included in their own sleeves inside a very sturdy black case - and with sharp, clear sound.
I am admittedly not much of a techie and, therefore, cannot get into the pluses and minuses of mono versus stereo sound. I can only offer an every-person kind of review and state, without a doubt, that the sound is rich and full, every nuance can easily be heard with these re-masters. From the early days of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to the final days of "The Long And Winding Road", it is a treat to the ears to have the catalog out in its entirety - this set also includes tracks that did not make it on to the albums, as well as mini DVD documentaries - in such a handy fashion, with such care taken to preserve the classics.
So if this does end up being the pinnacle of "new" Beatles releases, I cannot think of a better way to end the merchandise train. (Though, naturally, I am skeptical. I'm sure there is likely other material somewhere...)
This fan, however, feels it is money well spent to have such a vast array of material and such quality at my fingertips!
